Joe lives with his wife and son in a small town in central Massachusetts. His travels around the world have enhanced his love for humanity and for the natural world. Joe loves to hike, mountain bike or simply be outdoors. An holistic health enthusiast, he engages in mind-body practices and the martial art of Aikido. Aside from all that he writes fiction and social commentary and teaches geography in higher ed. You may also find Joe behind a brush, a potter's wheel, the bench in his wood shop, or occupied in some other interesting manual endeavor.

The Gift of Life Elsewhere

Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, detail We humans tend to see ourselves as the center of all things.  It’s understandable, as we haven’t encountered anyone else in this vast universe, not even a lowly extraterrestrial bacteria as of yet. What happens when we do find life elsewhere?  We will lose our special status as the bearers of a unique haven of life in the cosmos, but what will we gain? It means something that we are trying hard to find out.  As I write this blog, Curiosity is digging in the Martian landscape hoping to discover signs of living matter.  We are searching the heavens for extra solar planets in that tantalizing Goldilocks zone, the place where the temperature is just right and liquid water may exist and so life. Source: Nasa.gov I f you really want to know... I 'm a very flighty person, never satisfied with the view.  I like to explore, look beyond the next hill. That's why I became a geographer. This is particularly true of the mental realm, the landscape of ideas. It's gotten me in trouble. T he problem is, unlike the material world where the ground feels solid beneath me, it didn't take me long to realize the landscape of my mind is quite different. I can simultaneously be situated in completely contrary ideas and not even know it for years.  When I discovered this apparent flaw, I didn't take it well. M ost of my really important finds, have come in stages, like for example, the notion that belief itself has much to do with the physical.  My body, through feelings and emotions, shapes my thoughts in a way that counter what I was taught in school.
