     The Kuiper belt is a resting place for comets, but change is everpresent in the universe, and so objects from it occasionally wonder off. Some have fundamentally shaped life here on earth. You see, all of the heavenly bodies around Sol are bound to each other through the wonder of gravity. The icy bodies speak to each other through fundamental forces, and we humans on this tiny rock are left to imagine the outcomes of their conversation.

      There is something worthwhile about contemplating ourselves as living on a tiny rock floating in the unknow ether of the cosmos. From our minute vantage point, we have begun to discover the universe, and in the making of that perception we come to know more about ourselves. Science unravels the patterns of nature and, in turn, we are left to spin such discoveries into the stories that make life meangingful.

      And so, from micro heavenly objects to micro tales, I leave you with such a story from a dear friend...

What happens when we do find life elsewhere?  We will lose our special status as the bearers of a unique haven of life in the cosmos, but what will we gain? It means something that we are trying hard to find out.  As I write this blog, Curiosity is digging in the Martian landscape hoping to discover signs of living matter.  We are searching the heavens for extra solar planets in that tantalizing Goldilocks zone, the place where the temperature is just right and liquid water may exist and so life. This is particularly true of the mental realm, the landscape of ideas. It's gotten me in trouble. T he problem is, unlike the material world where the ground feels solid beneath me, it didn't take me long to realize the landscape of my mind is quite different.
